Deleuze connects affect to auto-affection in Spinoza's third form of knowledge in the Ethics, where we find a non-subjective auto-affection. Rather than subjective, it's ontological: the auto-affection of essence, the internal agreement in adequate ideas of our essence, the essence of other things, and God / Nature's essence (44; Malabou here cites both Spinoza and Deleuze's online lectures on Spinoza; the point is also made at Deleuze 1988, 51). Spinoza’s Ethics, for Deleuze, constitutes a rejection of the transcendent Good/Evil distinction in favour of a merely functional opposition between good and bad. Good and Evil, for Spinoza as for Lucretius and Nietzsche, are the illusions of a moralistic world-view that does nothing but reduce our power to act and encourages the experience of the sad passions (SPP 25; LS 275-8). that idea and affect are two kinds of modes of thought which differ in nature, which are irreducible to one another but simply taken up in a relation such that affect presupposes an idea, however confused it may be. This is the first point. Now a second, less superficial way of presenting the idea-affect relation.

Spinoza's theoretical philosophy is one of the most radical attempts to construct a pure ontology with a single infinite substance. This book, which presents Spinoza's main ideas in dictionary form, has as its subject the opposition between ethics and morality, and the link between ethical and ontological propositions.

Keywords affect theory, Spinoza, postqualitative inquiry In Spinoza’s principal book, which is called the Ethics and which is written in Latin, one finds two words: AFFECTIO and AFFECTUS. Some translators, quite strangely, translate both in the same way. This is a disaster. They translate both terms, affectio and affectus, by “affection.” One of the core contributions of this study is in locating Barach Spinoza’s concepts within art education (specifically the art critique), and its use of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari’s notion of rhizomatic thinking to substantiate methodologies and methods in art-making: where embracing an intuitive practice, and forgoing pre-conceived outcomes becomes essential to the unfolding of a student’s … 2014-04-02 Deleuze's desire is modelled after Spinoza's conatus; it is neither a 'want' nor 'lack' but the effort of an individual entity to persevere in its own existence. Spinoza always thinks of conatus as being determined by its capacity to affect and to be affected; it is not, therefore, difficult to think of conatus as desire.
